This simply means that, as we grow older, we begin to learn from our past mistakes. As they say: "Experience is the best teacher." In other words, it is the experiences in earlier life that reshape the man. That is what they mean when they say: "The child is the father of the man." We become wiser as we grow older. The foolish things we did, the wrong decisions we made as children and young persons are only corrected much later in life.

Jonathan Swift (1667-1745) Notice that this is what the wise person does. In every generation, however, we have too many people who continue to cling to the follies, prejudices, and false opinions of their youth deep into their old age. It is they who ensure that the mistakes of the past are repeated.
A great many people will think they are thinking when they are merely rearranging their prejudices. ~ William James ~
