Reading his biographical account (https://encyclopedia2.thefreedictionary.com/Mark+Twain), I get to know that the humorist Mark Twain turned into a pessimistic figure after the deaths of his wife and his daughters in the later part of his life. It looks obvious that he had a bitter experience in life probably from someone who he trusted because he had been kind to that person but the person did not show up to Twain's expectations.

What I think of the statement is simple : there are no absolutes in life. We see life with a tinted glass formed by our own feelings and perceptions of the world. So, we can choose to see life like Twain or get in the other person's shoe and try to do a little better than that.

Dancing Great intellect, shuch as Samuel, Asimov, Brauoski and the rest of the Few, rises without crdiitation, to the top, like oxygen in boiling water. Remember, his favorite city was Heidlberg !

A story goes... when I was seventeen I thought my parents were the stupidest people I had ever known...when I turned twenty-one, I was surprised by how much they had learned in four years. That's definitely paraphrased. I remember that story from Hal Holbrooks, the one-man performance he used to do. I saw it on PBS years ago.
