Hello,

The actor looked out from the stage onto a sea of faces.
(Longman Dictionary of American English)

What does 'look out' mean?
Do actors do such an action on the stage?

look out of something
to gaze outward from inside something. (Of is usually retained before pronouns.)
Look out of the window and see if it is raining. I looked out of the door to see what the weather was like.

The first is a direction. You look in a specific direction - you are on the stage - in that enclosed space. You can keep looking in that enclosed space, or you can look out into the audience. Like looking out of a window.
