I don't often write poetry, but from time to time the spirit moves me to create something for a special occasion. I wrote this poem quite a few years ago, and it comes to mind a couple of times a year (for obvious reasons).

Daylight Saving Time

I can’t be sure what others think, but from my point of view,
It seems as if we do some things there’s just no need to do.
Although I may be missing out on something quite sublime,
I’ve never understood the point of Daylight Saving Time.

I know it’s not important, in the grander scheme of life,
But still I have to laugh at how we cause ourselves such strife.
I can’t escape the feeling that it ought to be a crime
To lose an hour of sleep each Spring, to Daylight Saving Time.

They say it’s good for farmers, ’cause they gain an hour of sun;
That’s quite a trick, and I’d sure like to know just how it’s done.
To sleep an extra hour, and still catch morning in its prime,
Must mean the Earth slows down its spin on Daylight Saving Time.

But no, the world keeps turning at its old, established speed;
We only fool ourselves, and that’s an easy trick indeed.
To think we’ve brought more sunshine to so northerly a clime
Is naught but self-delusion, bought with Daylight Saving Time.

In fact, it used to make some sense, ’way back in World War II,
To keep lights out, in case the Axis bombers might get through.
But that’s an old-time rationale, no longer worth a dime,
And surely no excuse today for Daylight Saving Time.

If any good can come from all this self-inflicted grief,
It’s that the seasons change, and sometimes change can bring relief.
Each fall we get to push back that alarm clock’s raucous chime
For one sweet hour that marks the end of Daylight Saving Time.

(I've posted this poem before, back at "spring-forward" time in 2015. I thought of posting a link to that post, but decided to just submit it here instead.)

I've made a daring attempt to make up a limerick about a person who really lived - may he rest in peace:

There lived a baker in our neck of the woods
Who hated to get up even earlier than he normally would,
For many years he fought with unlethal weapons
Such as requests, declarations and petitions,
To ban that crazy Daylight Saving Time for good.

Great poem NKM...Applause
You are a Poet and didn't even know it!

Seriously, I'm going to keep it, if it's ok with you, to share with my close friends...you will get the credit...
Tell me if it's ok ...you'll have to write a new poem soon when they stop changing the time...it's in debate already, with the powers that be.
